Why new Etsy shops get suspended, and how to stay safe

The usual reasons a new shop is suspended, what to do before you open, and how the appeal works if it happens.

A suspension in the first weeks is the fear every new seller has. Most cases come down to a small number of causes, and nearly all of them can be avoided before you open.

The usual reasons

  • Details that do not match. Wrong or incomplete identity, tax or bank information.
  • Someone else's brand. Disney, Marvel, football clubs, celebrity names and song lyrics in a design, title or tag.
  • A link to a suspended account. Sharing a device, payment method or internet connection with a shop that was suspended before.
  • Items that are not yours to sell. Reselling ready-made goods as handmade, or selling files you have no right to sell.
  • Hiding how the item was made. Including not disclosing AI tools.

Before you open

  1. Use your own real name, ID and bank or Payoneer details, and make them match.
  2. Open one shop only, from your own phone or laptop and your own internet connection.
  3. Read Etsy's prohibited items and intellectual property rules once, slowly.
  4. Keep brand names and characters out of everything you publish.
  5. Disclose AI tools on every listing where they were used.

If it happens

  • Read the email from Etsy carefully. It normally says which rule is involved.
  • Fix what you can, then file an appeal from the suspended account. Etsy's help page explains the steps and the time limit.
  • Explain plainly what went wrong and what you changed. Attach documents if you are asked for them.
  • Do not open a new shop while the appeal is open. That usually makes it permanent.
